"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us."  -Albert Schweitzer

This site is dedicated to paying it forward to all of the custodial single parents (both moms and dads) out there...AKA The Kindle Project.  We all know someone in this position whether it be a family member, a friend, or a coworker.  We will be sharing our thoughts and insights as we look at the past, present, and future of "flying solo" as a parent.  Please check back regularly for updates.

Once largely limited to poor women and minorities, single motherhood is now becoming the new “norm”.  This prevalence is due in part to the growing trend of children born outside marriage — a societal trend that was virtually unheard of decades ago.  About 4 out 10 children were born to unwed mothers.  Nearly two-thirds are born to mothers under the age of 30.

Today 1 in 4 children under the age of 18 — a total of about 17.4 million — are being raised without a father and nearly half (45%) live below the poverty line.  For those living with father only, about 21% live in poverty.  In contrast, among children living with both parents, only 13% are counted as poor.

We accept donations to empower custodial parents with knowledge and support to successfully raise their children on their own.
